Down Under with Versace

An Underwater Collection for the Bold and Optimistic

Taken to an underwater dreamscape, the Versace Spring Summer 2021 collection inspires hope, optimism, and eternal beauty through its effervescent, extravagant garments. Led by a digital octopus named Churro, virtual attendees escape to Versacopolis, a utopian seabed settlement ruled by Versace’s iconic figure Medusa. Strong, confident women and men swim through the currents while wearing vibrant beachwear mixed with classic business elegance.

This underwater kingdom is all about natural sensuality and beauty while simultaneously embodying a boss type energy of someone who has things to do and isn't afraid of expressing their fun, creative identity. Wet hair and damp skin define the aquatic elements of the body and compliment the blue waves which drape the walls of the Milanese exhibit, Megawatt Court. Ancient Greek ruins makeup the landscape and provide seating to masked audience members (Versace employees who tested negative) whilst the sea people of Versacopolis walk around them unmasked in a traditional runway format.

Slim, cropped cuts with ruffled waves drape the bodies of these sea inhabitants. Some wear blazers while others reveal their bras. Embellished bustier tops and diamond encrusted starfish adorn the delicate yet vibrant garments. Colorful low sandal heels, slides, platforms and sneakers make up the footwear of those walking atop the sand. Dainty, vibrant Medusa handbags and embroidered jewels allow attendees to indulge in the current fantasy but soon-to-be reality of wearing these garments out of the house.

Donatella Versace reminds us that “the process of dreaming is both human and undeniably real. Versacepolis is where mythology meets the reality of the unknown.” The unknown signifying the mystery of the near future as we journey through the COVID-19 pandemic alongside the 80% of unexplored ocean landscape. This Digital Fashion Week witnessed a unique space for artistic creativity amidst a global tragedy. Some designers opted for an espacist approach while others emerged in the realities of the present. As an ocean lover, optimist and dreamer, I naturally resonated with Versace’s show. The vivacious garments, aquatic setting, and confident sea people left me feeling inspired and excited for the approaching new year despite the uncertainty that prevails.

Glamorous, fun, majestic beauty swayed in congruence with a natural sense of confidence and sensuality. This collection is tailored to the global, nonconforming dreamer who craves disruption and is excited by uncertainty. As stated by Versace, “I wanted to create something disruptive, something that could be in tune with what has changed inside all of us. To me that meant dreaming of a new world. A world made of popping colors and fantastic creatures and a world in which we can all coexist peacefully. This collection has an upbeat soul and is optimistic, dreamy, positive… These are clothes that bring you joy.”
